Snow Peak Augmented Reality

2020, proposed a new challenge for outdoor enthusiast shopping for large camping gear while store were temporarily closed and majority of the population under mandated quarantine. I too awoken a dormant outdoors-person, and spent many weekends unplugged in the woods. Those that know me well, know how much I appreciate well designed home / camp goods. I fell in love with the Japanese Lifestyle Brand Snow Peak. I spent many hours researching their products. I often felt drawn to Youtube to see if I could grasp the scale of some of their items. I was inspired by retailers like Target, Gucci, and IKEA, using AR technology to place items within a designated space using the camera built into our phones.

The Idea

The idea for Snow Peak AR came from personal experience as a shopper during 2020, purchasing large camping gear. At times it was difficult to estimate the size of a tent, a fire pit, or other physical items based on dimensions listed on the website.

Combatting these misunderstandings took three main steps:

  1. Identify the types of information people misunderstand the most (and why they misunderstand them).

  2. Define a user group.

  3. Develop a solution that works to prevent these misunderstandings from occurring and provides users with something they don't already have.
